Kokomo wins MHYC SSORC Farr 40 division

kokomo_2010Sydney (AUS) – The third event in the 2010-2011 Australian Farr 40 circuit, the Middle Harbour Yacht Club Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship (SSORC) was won by Lang Walker’s Kokomo after two days of racing on the Manly Circle off Sydney heads.

Kokomo dominated the event winning four out of the six races. Conditions on both days dealt the fleet a big swell in a fairly light north, north east breeze that reached a maximum of 10 knots on the offshore race course.

In the final race of the regatta Lisa and Martin Hill’s Estate Master had to retire with an injured crew who was taken ashore and treated. Three of the remaining boats racing were called OCS by PRO Denis Thompson and once they had corrected their infringement had the course shorted as the breeze dropped off to three knots. New Zealander Brett Neill’s White Cloud capitalised on the OCS call to win the race and finish the event in second place overall.

“We’re extremely pleased with our result this weekend, the conditions we had can be typical of what we are potentially going to see in February and it helps with our training going forward towards the 2011 Rolex Farr 40 Worlds. You really had to have your witts about you and we are happy with how we went other than being a little too keen in the last start as we were aiming for five out of six for bullets”, commented Walker after racing today.

Racing over the two days of the regatta was held on the same waters where the 2011 Rolex Farr 40 World Championship will be held and all six crew racing this weekend took full advantage of time on the water to hone crew skills and racing manoeuvres.

Coming up next weekend will be the December Sprint Series for the Farr 40 class which will be conducted by MHYC. Teams who raced this weekend will be joined by class colleagues from Tasmania and the USA and the following weekend current Rolex Farr 40 World Champions Nerone from Italy will be joining the fleet for the 2010 Rolex Trophy.
