Barking Mad takes European title in Istanbul. Enfant Terrible wins European Circuit 2011.

oct17_2011_farreurofinalIstanbul, Turkey. 16th October 2011. In a thrilling conclusion which saw the top two boats heading into the final race of the series tied on points, Barking Mad (USA) has been crowned UNO Farr 40 European Champion 2011. The boat owned by Jim Richardson and with Hamish Pepper calling tactics secured victory with a storming win in the last race. Second place went to Alberto Rossi’s Enfant Terrible (ITA) and Wolfgang Schaefer’s Struntje Light (GER) took third.

Richardson, three time Farr 40 World Champion and former Class president was pleased with the level of competition within the fleet: “The racing was incredibly tight all week; Enfant Terrible, Transfusion, Struntje Light and our boat were neck and neck for quite a while and we went into the last race tied on points with Enfant – who would have won the tie-break as we hadn’t won any races - and just 2 points ahead of Transfusion.”

It was only the last downwind leg of the final race that Richardson knew victory was within his grasp: “We were trailing both Transfusion and Enfant at the top mark. The boats were very close together and when we went down the run they ended up going round the right hand mark, which was the favoured one, and we had to go around the left hand mark. It turned out that we got a really good right hand wind shift and some pressure and got ahead of both of them but it wasn’t until we got around the last top mark and set a spinnaker and got a monster puff that we extended our lead quite a bit. It was definitely an exciting event right to the end.”

Barking Mad takes lead. Four-way fight underway for European title

Istanbul, Turkey. 15th October 2011. Day three of the UNO Farr 40 European Championship provided everything that a great day’s racing should: three exhilarating races in up to 20 knots of wind, numerous lead changes, reversals of  fortune from one race to the next, photo finishes and a complete reshuffle at the top of the overall classification.

Jim Richardson’s Barking Mad (USA) managed to inch into overall pole position with a 2,2,3 scoreline today bumping Alberto Rossi’s Enfant Terrible (ITA) into second place, just one point behind. Wolfgang Schaefer’s Struntje Light (GER) has moved back to third place just one point clear of current class World Champion Transfusion (AUS), owned by Guido Belgiorno Nettis, in fourth. The eight-strong fleet therefore heads into tomorrow’s final day of racing with a maximum of two races left to complete the series and only five points separating the top four boats.

Hamish Pepper, tactician on Barking Mad explained how good sailing and good luck combined to move his team from third to first overall: “It was an extremely good day for us, we had three solid races and the others managed to have a bad day and we were able to gain points on the leader so we’re happy. The team sailed very well today and things went our way, we got some good shifts and luck was on our side when we needed it: today was our day.”

Consistency pays off for Enfant Terrible. Struntje Light moves into second.

Istanbul, Turkey. 14th October 2011. Consistently good performances in the two races held on day two of the UNO Farr 40 European Championship enabled Alberto Rossi’s Enfant Terrible (ITA) to consolidate their lead in the overall classification. Two second places in tricky conditions on the Sea of Marmara off Istanbul were enough to extend the Italian team’s delta to seven points ahead of Wolfgang Schaefer’s Struntje Light (GER) and Jim Richardson’s Barking Mad (USA).

While Enfant Terrible – recent winners of the ORC World Championship in their class - now have a reasonable lead, only five points separate the following four boats and up to five more races may be run in the series. With no discard coming into play and tricky conditions meaning even top-class teams can come a cropper - current Farr 40 World Champion Guido Belgiorno-Nettis had a fairly disastrous day as his Transfusion (AUS) took last place in both of today’s races and slid from second place overall to fourth– every race will count over the next two days. Organized by the Farr 40 Class Association in collaboration with Marmara Sailing Club, the event sees eight Farr 40 one-design yachts representing 6 nations competing from 13th to 16th October.

Enfant Terrible and Transfusion neck and neck on day one.oct14_2011_farr40euro2

Istanbul, Turkey. 13th October 2011. Alberto Rossi’s Enfant Terrible (ITA) leads the overall classification after three races held on Day One of the Uno Farr 40 European Championship 2011. Current Farr 40 World Champion Guido Belgiorno-Nettis, owner of Transfusion (AUS), sits in second place on equal points, with only Rossi’s victory in the final race of the day breaking the tie on countback. For Jim Richardson’s Barking Mad (USA), three was clearly a magic number today as the three-time Class World Champion took third place in each of today’s three races to take third place overall.

Race 1 one of the Championship, organized by the Farr 40 Class Association in collaboration with Marmara Sailing Club, started in approximately 8 knots of wind from 240° and saw Enfant Terrible control the fleet for the first half of the race before an insistent Struntje Light (GER) surged ahead on the second windward leg. The German boat, with owner Wolfgang Schaefer at the helm, chose the right side of the course and took victory by a clear margin ahead of Enfant Terrible and Barking Mad in third.

Transfusion, with Olympic sailor Mike Leigh on tactics, went it alone on the left at the start of Race 2 and rounded the top mark in the lead closely followed by Struntje Light and Enfant Terrible, well ahead of the rest of the fleet. At the downwind  gate Enfant Terrible, with current top-ranked match racer Francesco Bruni on tactics, just managed to squeeze inside Struntje Light to round second. Transfusion went on to lengthen her lead on the last downwind run while it was all change for the rest of the fleet on the final leg. Alessandro Barnaba’s Fiamma (ITA) moved up to take second place and Barking Mad, who had doggedly climbed up the fleet after rounding the first mark in second-to-last position, claimed a hard-earned third place.
