This past weekend six of the Great Lakes Farr 40s gathered in Chicago for the final regatta and races of the season. Racing out of the Chicago Yacht Club's Belmont station, racing included Saturday's (9/13) Sheldon Clark Regatta and Sunday's (9/14) Great Lakes Farr 40 Invitational.
On Saturday crews awoke to 41 degree temperatures and NW winds at 16-18 knots.
The six FARR 40s completed three races in challenging conditions in terms of wind and waves with large swells intermixed with converging waves.
PENDRAGON, helmed by Scott Jackman (pictured at right), won Saturday's Sheldon Clark Regatta FARR 40 class with a 2, 2, 1 score line, followed by Leif Sigmond's NORBOY (1,3,3) in 2nd and Phil Dowd's Inferno (5,1,2) in 3rd.
The Chicago Yacht Club's Belmont Station greeted the sailors upon their return at the annual Big Kahuna party.
On Sunday, the temperature was 42 but slowly rose to high 50s with bright sunny skies, calm seas and champagne sailing conditions. W/SW winds started the day at 10-12 knots but slowly faded throughout the morning resulting in the third race being shortened to two legs.
Hot Lips, helmed by Chris Whitford, won Sunday's Great Lakes FARR 40 Invitational with a 3, 1, 1 score line. Inferno, Pendragon and Norboy tied with 10 points each, with the 2nd going to Inferno and 3rd to Pendragon on the tiebreaker.
In addition to the five Chicago boats competing, Joel Carroll and his Milwaukee based Hooligan traveled to Chicago to participate in the weekend's racing.
